Abstract

The present article is based on Aldo Rossi ‘s conceptions of city and urban evolution to discuss contemporary design methodologies that take into account preexistence. From the analysis of the formation, permanence and transformation of the “islands” in Porto, Portugal, two moments of this typology are studied: Álvaro Siza’s project for the Bouça neighborhood and the process of rehabilitation of the remaining “islands” .
