The article sheds light on the treatment reserved for urban preexistence in the thinking of Cesare Brandi, an art historian and author of Theory of Restoration, published in 1963 in Italy. From the study of the Theory in correlation with other texts of the author, still little diffused in Brazil, we try to show that his reflections on the restoration of patrimonial assets are not limited to canonical works of art, to the paintings and sculptures. Brandi’s analyzes expand the universe of study of Art History, embracing Architecture and the City, themsel-ves, as artistic objects.
